Jean Mintoft

At the age of 20 Jean went to evening classes at Birmingham College of Art and learnt all the basic drawing skills which have been invaluable to her ever since. However, getting married and starting a family prevented her taking steps towards art as a career.

In 1999 Jean and her husband moved to the west coast of Wales. There, inspired by the beautiful scenery, she started to paint landscapes. At the time she painted mainly in pastels, but after moving to Plymouth in 2014 she has experimented with other media, and currently uses mainly oils.

In 2018, on a holiday in Ireland, Jean came across landscapes in felt and was bowled over by the effect of wool for composing dramatic landscapes. She now includes felt artwork as part of her repertoire.

Colour has a strong emotional resonance for Jean. She is interested in the contrast of light and shade, dark and light. Strong defined colours are her favourites, and in general avoids muted colours. She paints a wide variety of subjects as well as landscapes.
