Carla Jones

Carla spent her childhood doodling and writing poems and it was this passion that led her to gain a first class (BA Hons) in Creative Writing & Literature from The Open University, followed by a Masters degree with distinction from Goldsmiths College, London. Her poetry has been published in a variety of national and international publications but after attending a papercutting workshop in early 2014 she was hooked and has since been experimenting and developing her skills and style.

Carla is drawn to colour, form and shape and especially how they interplay with personality in portraiture. Music and literature have been her lifelong passions and an interest in the ‘cult of celebrity’ has inspired many of these illustration style works.

Each piece is drawn in reverse and cut by hand from a single sheet of paper, cutting away to reveal the image which Carla then infills with intricately and individually cut papers. She notes that paper cutting is a highly therapeutic practice, but one that does not allow much for errors; there is a delicate balance of the strength and fragility of paper. All her works are made with acid free, beautifully textured Murano papers and Ph Neutral glue so ensure the colours stay vibrant.
